Teachers Notes:
The Fur Trail is an interactive resource, which offers pupils the opportunity to study a global trade in real, relevant and contemporary contexts. The production, buying, treating, designing, manufacturing and retailing of fur play important roles in the economic activity of many countries, from Afghanistan to the USA, and from Argentina to Namibia.
The networks that transport fur from location to location at different stages of its manufacture are complex and world-wide. The fur trade is a significant contributor to sustainable development in areas where habitats and communities are fragile.
The fur trade is made up of skilled craftsmen working in small workshops, and this appeals to today’s consumer.
At the other end of the trail, modern techniques make fur an attractive material for designers to use both in haute couture and in high street fashion.
